Major markets in the city of Lagos were shut yesterday following the coronation ceremony of Mrs. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of the former Governor of Lagos state, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, By Oba of Lagos, Oba Riliwan Babatunde Osuolale Akiolu ,as the new Iyaloja- General of Nigeria.

The coronation ceremony was part of the activities marking the 70th birthday of the Oba of Lagos, Oba Riliwan Akiolu 1 at the Iga-iduganran, Lagos Island local government.

The event to mark the coronation ceremony was held at The Haven Event Center which had in attendance political leaders and market women and men from various states in the country.

Folashade took the mantle of leadership of market women and men in Nigeria from the late Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, the mother of Tinubu who died on Saturday June 15, this year, at the age of 96.

Before she assumes the position, Folashade has been working as Iyaloja-General in acting capacity as she used to represent mama Magaji at various functions. She was also the head of Lagos State Market Board and performs all functions of Iyaloja while mama was alive.

Markets Women and Men in Lagos State some of the major markets in the state, shops and stalls were locked to celebrate with the new Iyaloja-General’s  coronation ceremony.

Some of the affected markets included Rauf Aregbesola Market, Iyana-Ipaja, Alimosho Local Government, Ketu, Mile 12 market and others.

During the coronation, Oba Akiolu advised the new Iyaloja to be diligent and committed to the service of humanity adding that the position was important to the development of market activities in Lagos State and Nigeria at large.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu also said the new Iyaloja was capable of coordinating market activities in Lagos State, as she noted that Tinubu-Ojo was under the tutelage of the late Iyaloja General, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji.

“The position of Iyaloja comes with lots of duties and responsibilities.

“It is expected that she will succeed with her sense of maturity, respect for elders and diligence,” she said.

Tinubu also advised the Iyaloja to use her office to ensure prosperity of traders in Lagos State.

Mrs Hawawu Asindemade, the Iyaloja General and Chairperson, Osun Market Board, dismissed criticisms that Tinubu-Ojo was too young for the position.
